Ghosts at North Leigh Roman Villa
24 January 2022
The series of low walls and mosaic flooring at North Leigh are all that remain of one of the largest Roman villas in England. But do more supernatural relics of the past linger on here as well?
In Folklore of Oxfordshire, Christine Bloxham reports that North Leigh has been the sighting of a ghostly Roman chariot, presumably related in some way to the Roman villa at East End.
There is also a belief amongst locals in East End that if you visit the Roman villa on a certain day of the year you can hear the sound of many sandaled feet marching up and down the courtyard. This is believed to be the sound of a garrison of Roman soldiers being drilled in the courtyard at the villa.
